"Recognized as a Global Communicators Award Program by North Carolina in the World and the NC State Board of Education, September 2006"
Dual Language Immersion and Multicultural Education Program
Learning a second language at an early age offers children invaluable lifelong benefits. Aside from the ability to communicate in two languages, other advantages include improved overall academic performance, superior problem-solving abilities, cross-cultural competency and job competitiveness in the global economy.
Dual language immersion combines classes of 50% native Spanish speaking children with 50% native English speakers. Students learn to understand, speak, read and write in Spanish as well as English. Instruction in two languages is split daily between two teachers K-5. Children emerge from the program bilingual and equipped with experiences and life skills that will help them become good communicators, leaders, and global citizens.
Greene County's Los Puentes Program was established in 2003 through a Z. Smith Reynolds grant written by Dr. Rebecca Torres of East Carolina University.
The Global Communicators Program, a project of Gov. Easley's North Carolina in the World initiative and the NC State Board of Education recognized Greene County Schools for its dual language immersion program during the school district's September 2006 Board of Education meeting. David Williams, former director of the Global Communicators Program, made the presentation to board chair Pat Adams on behalf of the State Board of Education and its Chairman Howard Lee. Greene County Schools is one of only four districts in the state to be designated a Global Communicators School District. Presently, we are a charter member of the Global Schools Network.
Currently, the award-winning program serves Kindergarten through first grades at Snow Hill Primary School; second through third grades at West Greene Elementary School; and, fourth and fifth grades at Greene County Intermediate School.
