We want to make you aware of the recent cybersecurity incident involving Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, the learning management system used by many schools in North Carolina.

On Thursday evening, May 7, 2026, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) temporarily disabled Canvas access through NCEdCloud statewide after unauthorized messages appeared on the platform. This action was taken out of an abundance of caution to help protect student and staff information while the incident was investigated.

NCDPI has since received an interim assessment from CrowdStrike, the third-party cybersecurity firm assisting with the investigation. According to Instructure, there are currently no ongoing signs of compromise within the Canvas environment in North Carolina or nationwide. At this time, there is also no evidence that passwords or sensitive information, such as social security numbers, were compromised.

As a result, NCDPI restored statewide access to Canvas on Monday, May 11.

Families and students are still encouraged to remain cautious of phishing attempts or suspicious messages and to report anything unusual to their school.
